Auburn AD says Tigers would have beaten Alabama without ‘Kick Six’

By Andy Johnston

Auburn AD Jay Jacobs says the Tigers would have defeated Alabama even without the "Pick Six."

Auburn AD Jay Jacobs says the Tigers would have defeated Alabama even without the “Pick Six.”

Even if you don’t believe in luck, some crazy good things happened to Auburn last year.

There were last-minute wins over Texas A&M and Mississippi State even before the improbable catch against Georgia — The Prayer in Jordan-Hare — and the still shocking missed field goal return — the Kick Six — to defeat Alabama.

Was it luck? No way, Auburn AD Jay Jacobs told AL.com.

“We were going to win the Alabama game whether it went to overtime or not. We had the momentum going and it was at our place and we felt good about it. Then we have that miraculous play again, but we were going to win that game.”

Jacobs admitted that luck might have played a role in the 43-38 victory over Georgia.

“There could be some luck involved in that, but you don’t have that luck if Ricardo (Louis) is not looking around for that ball trying to make the play regardless of the odds. I can see how people would see that and think that way.”

Auburn’s last-second success ran out against Florida State in the National Championship game. The Seminoles scored with 13 seconds left for a 34-31 victory.

Past tense tough talk is for Bama and UGA fans. I think our AD should take sit down and shut-up. We were lucky to beat UGA and BAMA last year and our limitations were  leveraged by FSU. The D line of FSU was clearly better than any we had faced. I say this year we beat LSU and drop the Bammer game in Tuscaloser but take the UGA in Athens due to their retooling at key positions. Bammer has a D line that will be much improved and Nicky SaBear will be ready AUs offense.

The kick six was probably the greatest ending to the greatest rivalry in the greatest of their games. Never will college football have all those circumstances met again.

The final play showing a FG block and then sneaking out a return unit after the timeout was one of the greatest coaching moves of all time as well.

Thing people miss out on is Auburn had a decimated secondary last year, a young OL, an inexperienced LB corp and only one reliable WR. Those will not be issues this year.

They kicked  two safeties off the team in spring and lost another for the year. Also one of their corners in the rotation only played part of the season.

They also replace Robinson with a five star recruit who has just as much talent and more maturity as he is 23 now after recovering from cancer. The loss of Dee Ford will be filled in with the gain of Carl Lawson and Devonte Lambert. They literally may have the most complete team and coaching staff next year.

All the momentum was on Auburns side. Before the tying TD drive, the Auburn offense shot itself in the foot time after time. Mason fumbled, bad fourth down misread on read option, dropped pass on bomb to Ricardo (could have been 6).

Despite all this the Auburn front four was blowing up the bama from 5 and stonewalling their offense. There was one third down before bama kicked and it was blocked that Gabe Wright and Carl Lawson literally threw their lineman at McCarron and he could do nothing but throw it into the ground.

If that was in OT the offense would have thrived moving forward.

You don't get luck four times a year for very long.......lets see what happens this year maybe four losses

FAir enough assessment... Likely would have eat Bama... 50% chance  at last. So what is the news here?

What if, what are chances of..... which UGA are you ........Au woulda beat...... Common, where is some spots news AJC  And to think you guys are wanting people to start paying for this zrap???

He's delusional.  If Saban would have kicked the field goal earlier instead of going for it on fourth down with a few minutes left in the game Bama would have won and there would not have been a kickk 6

Bama would have beat FSU! It's a shame that the Tide didn't get to play FSU! The SEC streak would still be alive today!

Luck will be on the other end this year! It's called bad luck for Auburn in 2014!

He forgot to mention the penalties and turnovers by Bama that made it a close game to begin with. I say they were a very lucky team to win games like they did last season.

Why do I get the idea the AJC 's second favorite team is Auburn?

I always heard Auburn and Ga we're kissing cousins and that

might be right. But just remember, that last touchdown by Auburn

against Ga . If I was a Ga fan, I would never forget it.

But the truth is, Brother left the door open with that stupid

15 yard penalty. He showed his backside and the refs

were just waiting for him .

tampa,

Three wordy posts and no mention of FL.

Felling OK?

Or, just a slow blog day on the Tampa Bay Times?

I think Bama would have won in OT.  I thought that at the time.  That lobbying for that second to be put back on the clock cost them big time.

Yeah Auburn would of beat Florida State to keep the SEC streak alive, BUT, they were robbed in 1993 and 2004. You will not find a bigger fan base of whiners...

What is with the Turkey Buzzards?  They got diarrhea of the mouth ever since the end of last year.  Just put a sock in it and do the talking on the field!  Jeeeeeeeezzzzzz

Jacobs is a tool. Auburn played Bama to a draw, and Nicky got out coached. Auburn won. End of story. Then Nicky got his butt handed to him by Oklahoma. Out coached again.

This guy has the same credibility problem that his programs have.  Benjamin Franklin said that the "stink of the fish begins at the head".  No way Auburn didn't have a shamrock up their bums last year.  And, to prove that true, let's just see what happens this year.

One thing I do know......Auburn did not execute and had no luck on the last FSU drive in the national title game. Somehow, I believe Bama would have stood up and stopped FSU on that last drive.  And I am sure Bama will be ready to play when Auburn comes calling this coming year.  Should be a really good one.

TampGator1

None of his comments matter.  Auburn won the game, so any other discussion about it is practically meaningless.  But, I can see his point.  Bama was frustrated, and so was Saban.  Auburn definitely had Bama on the ropes, but who knows which team would have won the game.  Luck or execution could have gone either way  I do know Bama had more talent on the field, but I also know Bama was being outcoached and outplayed that day. I am sure Bama will feel the same way playing Auburn at home this year, and they should.

Wonder if Saban or Cochran will post these comments in the weight room or locker room?

@greenedefense  Ummmm....no. FSU was just as talented as bama, maybe more so and had a HUGE edge at QB. McCarron was a good QB but no where near Winston.

FSU had probably the most talented team in the country last year. No weak spots.

@Dman  Or the Mason fumble in the 2nd when Auburn was driving? Or the Ricardo Louis drop? or the 4th down zone misread by Mashall?

No, but there must have been a lot of slow days for you in your middle school spelling class.....since you failed it so many times.

Feeling........spelled......."f...e...e....l...and then add the suffix, "ing"....remember that lesson?

Sure you want to do this?

@TowneLake  They were kind of robbed in 2004. Now that USC has been exposed the NCAA should have awarded the title to Auburn as you have seen that teams talent in the NFL for a decade now while USCs 2004 team has not done well in the NFL.

The real robbery was 1983 for Auburn. They entered the final game ranked third and had one of the top toughest schedules in the country. Miami jumped them from 5 despite identical records and a much weaker record.

@Gandolph The horseshoe fell out in the 4th quarter of the BCS CG.  It is very unlikely to find a purchase there again this year.  lol

@TampGator1  Auburn's defense wasn't all that good last year.  A good defense would have at least slowed FSU down enough to run out the clock.  Their Achilles heel was their secondary all year and that did them in on that last drive.

Bulletin board material does not win games, and you know that.  Execution and a little bit of luck does....along with better pre game and during game coaching.  No one will remember his comments during or after the game next year.....and no one should.  Meaningless pre season talk....and rubbing it in a little as well, and Auburn has that right until Bama beats them again.

Dman
Dman

Did you really watch the game? Just like several games that Auburn played this year, they were so lucky to come away with this win. They called it an upset for a lot of good reasons.

You need to go into a few locker rooms. In some cases it does give incentive.

I have been in too many and some players visualize it with reminders.

Have you been in The Gators facility since this past fall?  Look on the wall the next time you are in there...you might be a little shocked at what is posted and reposted.

Take care my friend.

I said it does not win games.  Of course, it give incentive to win them.  But, emotion never has won a football game.....ever.  Execution of well-coached plays by players win games.

DawgVoiceofReason
DawgVoiceofReason

@TampGator1 @CallingOutWhiners  WOW.  And you call yourself a college football fan?  To say emotion has not won a game, "ever" is to deny the reality of college football.  In a game involving effort and willpower and determination, emotion can be everything in a given game.  Rivalry games are all about emotion.

You might want to walk back those remarks...
