Season 6 of Spurrier vs. Swinney is off to an amazing start.
You have to love Steve Spurrier and Dabo Swinney and the verbal shoving match they have with one another. It’s so good, you wonder if they have an unstated understanding to pick at each other just to draw interest in the rivalry between South Carolina and Clemson.
They’ve gone at each other for five seasons, and even though the Gamecocks have won five straight over Swinney and his Tigers, he keeps coming back for more.
Which is fine with Spurrier.
He’s Yoda of the snide remark, a master at getting under a rival coach’s skin. Spurrier even has a label for this time of year, calling it “talking season.”
Here’s Swinney on Spurrier from the ACC Media Days: “He’s from Pluto, I’m from Mars.”
Spurrier’s retort on ESPN: “Dabo probably thinks there’s only, what, nine planets out there. I think I read where Pluto may not be considered one now.”
That just continued what has been an ongoing mouthing session between the two.
Reminded that Swinney said Clemson was the first team from South Carolina to win a BCS game after the Tigers defeated Ohio State last year, Spurrier responded: “We’ve never even been to (a BCS bowl). I’ll admit to that, although we beat them about every year. They get there and we don’t. That’s just the way it is. The SEC can only send two teams and the ACC sends two. We’ve got too many good teams going.”
And Spurrier doesn’t forget.
He brought up the time when Swinney dogged South Carolina, saying: “The only thing I remind Dabo of is his comments three years ago of the real Carolina being in Chapel Hill and the real USC being in California. Sometimes he forgets he throws some stuff out there also. He wants to make people believe that I’m the only one that throws a little stuff out there.”
Enjoy Season 6 of Spurrier vs. Swinney. I certainly will.
