Do you want a free couch?
If so, head to the Ashley Furniture HomeStore in College Station, Texas, and then hope and pray Texas A&M defeats South Carolina by 10 points or more in the opener on Aug. 28 (6 p.m. SEC Network).
If that happens, the store will repay their customers who buy furniture during it’s 12-day Kickoff Event, which runs from Saturday and until Aug. 27.
“You can buy just a sofa or a whole new living room,” Chris Clark, director of marketing for the Wilks Group told the Bryan-College Station Eagle. “If the Aggies win by 10 or more we’ll cut you a check for the amount.”
There are several factors going against Texas A&M.
- The Aggies no longer have Johnny Manziel.
- Sophomore Kenny Hill is making his first start at QB.
- Texas A&M is a 10 1/2- to 11-point underdog.
- South Carolina has won 18 consecutive home games, a school record.
Local store owners have been burned by these kinds of promotions in the past, the paper reported.
During the 1970s, the Coach’s Shop Men’s Wear and Fabric Care Service in Bryan offered discounts corresponding to how many points the Aggies won by. A 58-0 victory over Memphis State in 1978 cleaned out the store via the 58-percent discount in just a few hours after the doors opened.
Hill, who completed 16 passes in limited action last year, won the job over heralded freshman Kyle Allen.
Now he could help Texas A&M fans win furniture.
