Will Muschamp went right to work.
Two days after being hired to make Auburn’s defense more stout, Muschamp watched the Tigers practice on Monday, dressed in Auburn blue and orange, not Florida’s familiar colors.
This is from AL.com:
“He just observed,” Gus Malzahn said.
Did Muschamp offer any advice while at practice?
“I’m sure he will,” Malzahn said.
Auburn provided a behind-closed-doors peek at the highest-paid assistant coach in college football with a pair of photos of Muschamp, who last wore Auburn gear at the end of his two-year tenure as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator in 2007.
I wonder if it still fit, seven years later. He probably went with the updated gear.
Malzahn parted ways with former defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson after the Tigers gave up at least 30 points in the final six SEC games this season, the worst stretch in school history.
The Tigers were 10th in the SEC in scoring defense, ninth in total defense and 13th against the pass. They gave up 630 yards and 55 points in the Iron Bowl.
Muschamp is known for his defenses at LSU, Texas and Florida.
“This is the only job I was offered,” Muschamp said Saturday. “I’ve got a lot of friends in the coaching profession and when you get a phone call and talk to somebody, you guys like to run with it and all of a sudden we took a job or turned down a job of whatever.”
