It appears Jameis Winston risked arrest over a NCAA violation.
Winston admitted Tuesday night that he didn’t steal the crab legs from a Publix last April in an interview with current Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh assistant Jedd Fisch in an ESPN Draft Academy segment filmed in February.
Here’s the dialogue, according to the Orlando Sentinel:
Fisch asked how he would address that issue and why he ignored it.
Winston responded, “How am I supposed handle if I got them for free? Just say I messed up?”
Harbaugh replied, “If someone gave them to you for free?”
Winston responded, “Yea.
“The week before it was my buddy’s birthday and we had got a cake and we met a dude who was inside Publix. And he said, ‘Hey, any time you come in here, I got you.’ So that day, we just walked up and he hooked us up with that.
“And when I came in to get crab legs, he did the same thing. And he just gave them to me and I walked out.
“Someone from inside the store said I didn’t pay for them and that’s how the whole thing started.”
Watch the segment:
Winston had maintained throughout the ensuing investigation that he had forgotten to pay for the crab legs.
He was cited by the sheriff’s department, completed 20 hours of community service and was suspended by FSU baseball coach Mike Martin.
Winston is projected as the No. 1 pick in next week’s NFL Draft. He won the Heisman Trophy and led Florida State to the national championship as a freshman in 2013.
