GAINESVILLE — The Jim McElwain era began like Gators fans wanted it to— with an offensive outburst.

Sure, it was against a team that finished ranked 113th nationally in total defense and 118th nationally in scoring defense while posting a 2-10 record last season.

But Florida (1-0) did what it wasn’t able to do last season.

The Gators scored and scored fast on their way to a 61-13 win over New Mexico State (0-1) on Saturday in front of 90,227 excited fans at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. It marked Florida’s 26th consecutive win to open the season, which is now the longest season-opening winning streak in the country after Nebraska’s 29-game streak was snapped Saturday.

The Gators’ quarterback battle between Treon Harris and Will Grier was fun to watch, as both excelled. The duo combined to complete 29 of their 36 passes for 379 yards and four touchdown passes.
